Who we are?

Nether Edge is a Conservation Area, blessed with many large and beautiful trees, two theatres, a public park, a wood and a large General Cemetery. Besides a number of Christian churches and the Salvation Army citadel, the area also has a Synagogue. The Neighbourhood Group was founded in 1973 with the sole purpose of preserving and fostering these amenities. We are a charitable organization, run by volunteers on a non-political, non-sectarian basis. We publish a newsletter ten times a year. Membership is by voluntary subscription. An application form or standing order form should be sent to the membership secretary

The Group has a General Committee and a number of subcommittees and affiliated groups.  Perhaps the most important is the Planning Group, which examines planning applications affecting our area which have been submitted to the Council. It then makes recommendations regarding acceptance, modification or rejection, with a view to maintaining a balance between residential and commercial use - and of course limiting any nuisance that might result from planning errors. Following the closure of Nether Edge Hospital at the end of the 20th century, we were much involved in discussions which led to the conversion of a large part of the hospital into an attractive residential area. The Group were also instrumental in the move to install traffic-calming measures in parts of the area and are now, with the council, considering the practicalities of introducing 20mph speed limits throughout the area.

The Group has been responsible for improving the paths and planting in Brincliffe Edge Wood and also helps to maintain Chelsea Park -regularly supporting the November bonfire celebrations there. We were responsible for the splendid tree carving in the Park and fundraised for the path at the bottom of the Park.

We have permission from the council to plant and maintain the large flowerbed at the junction of Sharrowvale Road and Psalter Lane. Volunteer weeders, waterers or litterpickers are always welcome.

Monthly litter-picking sessions around Nether Edge Streets occur on the 2nd Saturday in each month. Assemble 10am in Sainsburys car park on Machon Bank Road.

Another rather offbeat project was the restoration of the various sewer-gas lamps in the area eg junction of Brincliffe Edge Road and Union Road.

Since October 2004, as part of CSV's Make a Difference Day, we have planted several thousand daffodil and crocus bulbs around the neighbourhood. Anyone wanting to plant bulbs on the grass verges at the end of October should contact the vice-chair.

There is a very active  Nether Edge Wildlife Watch group and we support many other leisure activities in the area.

If you become a member of the Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group you will receive 'EDGE' - our monthly newsletter, delivered to your door and get to hear what is going on in this beautiful area.
